100 Years of Huddersfield Corporation

The centenary of the Incorporation of the Borough of Huddersfield was celebrated in style with a programme of events that ran from March 1968 through to February 1869, including an exhibition at the Town Hall.

Major Roy Brook was commissioned to write The Story of Huddersfield, which is available to read online.

One of the highlights of the year-long celebrations was a Centenary Pageant held on Saturday 22 June. Despite it being a rainy day, thousands turned out to watch a parade of floats, bands and celebrities pass through the town centre. If you remember that day or if you took part in the parade, please get in touch!

The following month, crowds turned out once again to witness the last trolleybus service which ran to Outlane on 13 July.

During the next few years, work on the new Civic Centre was completed and the architecturally-bold Queensgate Market opened its doors in April 1970.

Local government reforms in England in the early 1970s led to the end of the County Borough of Huddersfield which became part of the current-day Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees on 1 April 1974.
